An unfounded or false rumor or story, especially one spread widely.
Example
"The claim that the company was bankrupt was a baseless canard spread by its rivals."
Etymology
From French 'canard', literally 'duck', perhaps from the idiom 'vendre un canard à moitié' (to half-sell a duck), meaning 'to swindle'.
