Cauterize

To burn or sear (tissue) with a hot iron or caustic agent, typically to stop bleeding or prevent infection; to make insensitive or indifferent.

Example

"The surgeon had to cauterize the small blood vessel to prevent further bleeding during the operation."

Etymology

From Greek 'kauterion' (branding iron), from 'kaiein' (to burn).
