Conjecture

An opinion or conclusion formed on the basis of incomplete information; a guess.

Example

"The detective could only make a conjecture about the motive for the crime, as there were no witnesses."

Etymology

From Latin 'conjectura' meaning 'a guess, a drawing of conclusions', from 'conicere' 'to throw together, to infer'.
