To kill, destroy, or remove a large percentage or part of.

Example

"The disease began to decimate the deer population, greatly reducing their numbers."

Etymology

From Latin decimare 'to tithe, to punish every tenth man', from decem 'ten'. Originally, it referred to killing one in ten, but now means to destroy a large proportion.
