a thing that someone believes to be real but that exists only in their imagination.

Example

"The monster under the bed turned out to be a figment of the child's vivid imagination."

Etymology

From Latin 'figmentum', meaning 'a formation, a fiction', from 'fingere' (to form, to feign).
