To place two or more things side by side, especially to compare or contrast them or to create an interesting effect.

Example

"The artist chose to juxtapose bright, vibrant colors with muted, earthy tones to evoke a sense of tension."

Etymology

From French 'juxtaposer', from Latin 'juxta' (next to) + 'ponere' (to place).
