Metonymy

The substitution of the name of an attribute or adjunct for that of the thing meant, for example, 'suit' for 'business executive,' or 'the crown' for 'the king.'

Example

"The White House announced a new policy today; this is an example of metonymy, as the building represents the President and his administration."

Etymology

From Greek metonumia 'change of name,' from meta 'change' + onoma 'name.'
