Pleonasm

The use of more words than are necessary to express an idea; redundancy.

Example

"The phrase 'free gift' is a pleonasm, as all gifts are inherently free."

Etymology

From Greek pleonasmos 'excess,' from pleonazein 'to be superabundant,' from pleion 'more.'
