Red Herring

Something, especially a clue, that is intended to be misleading or distracting.

Example

"The detective introduced a red herring into the investigation, sending the suspects down a false trail."

Etymology

Originates from the practice of dragging a smoked herring (which is red and strong-smelling) across a trail to distract hunting dogs, masking the scent of the fox.
