Saudade

A deep emotional state of melancholic longing for a person or thing that is absent; often with a knowledge that it may never return

Example

"She felt a powerful saudade for her homeland, a longing intensified by the distance and time."

Etymology

From Portuguese, of uncertain origin but possibly from Latin 'solitās' (solitude).
