Synecdoche
A figure of speech in which a part is made to represent the whole or vice versa, as in 'all hands on deck' (where 'hands' refers to sailors).
Example
"When she said 'I need to borrow your wheels,' she was using synecdoche to refer to your entire car."
Etymology
From Greek sunekdoche 'a receiving together,' from sunekdekhesthai 'to take with something else.'
