An underlying feeling or influence, especially one that is contrary to the prevailing atmosphere and not expressed openly.

Example

"Despite the polite smiles and pleasantries, an undercurrent of tension was palpable at the diplomatic dinner."

Etymology

From *under-* + *current*, originally referring to a current below the surface of water.
