The process of thoroughly examining or evaluating someone or something, especially in order to make a judgment or decision.
Example
"The committee spent weeks vetting all the candidates to ensure they selected the most qualified individual for the leadership role."
Etymology
From `vet` (verb), short for `veterinarian`, originally meaning to medically examine animals, extended to mean examining persons or things.
